“Lights” from Journey’s Infinity (1978) is the song that defined the band’s melodic era — and Neal Schon’s solo is one of the warmest, most singing lead performances in classic rock. Every note is placed with intention, and the tone is pure guitar and amp: no tricks, just touch.
About the Solo
The song sits in D, and the solo is built almost entirely around the D major pentatonic scale over a Bm–G–D progression. This is melodic playing at its finest — long sustained notes, wide expressive bends and a vibrato that never rushes. There are no fast runs to hide behind, which is exactly what makes it demanding: every note is exposed, so intonation, sustain and tone carry the entire solo.
What You Will Work On
- D major pentatonic phrasing — melodic vocabulary over a major-key progression
- Sustain and note control — holding a note until it says something
- Expressive bends and vibrato — Schon’s singing, vocal-like lead voice
- Playing over changes — following the Bm–G–D movement with your phrasing
- Tone and dynamics — building warmth with pick attack and guitar volume
Tips for Learning This Solo
- Learn it phrase by phrase and sing each line before you play it — this solo is written like a vocal melody.
- Check every bend against the target note played normally — with this much space, an out-of-tune bend is impossible to hide.
- Practice with the original recording to absorb how relaxed the timing is — Schon never hurries a phrase.
- Work on your tone before your speed here: a warm, sustaining sound is half of what makes this solo work.
